Adding further to the nexus of problems faced by the Allies during the Second Happy Time, the Kriegsmarine adopted a new Enigma coding machine, TRITON, early in 1942, making their signals temporarily impenetrable to the Allied codebreakers. It is perhaps significant that the Second Happy Time ended at the same time as the Allies captured TRITON code books from U-559 in the waters off Egypt.

U-559, skippered by Hans-Otto Heidtmann, found itself in serious trouble on October 30th, 1942. Hunted relentlessly for much of the day after being discovered by a group of five British destroyers, the Germans finally surfaced at 10:40 PM after a depth charge compromised their hull.
